SANDRA MACK-VALENCIA: DAZZLING BESTIARY

JULY 15 - AUGUST 29, 2020

AnArte Gallery presents Dazzling Bestiary, featuring Sandra Mack-Valencia’s paintings inspired by animal figures in whimsical landscapes. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, July 15, and will be on view through August 29, 2020.

Artist Statement

A "Dazzling Bestiary" is a compilation of paintings inspired by animal figurines, gemstones, and gold.  They are an invitation to new narratives and contemporary fables. Since my childhood, I was addicted to reading Aesop fables.  I believed all these creatures could actually talk, get dressed, and have human-like routines.  As an adult, I have a profound respect for animals.  I do believe they are here to teach us about the world.  Through my "Dazzling Bestiary," I pay tribute to them.

About the Artist

Sandra Mack-Valencia grew up in Colombia, where under the smell of oil paint, turpentine, and linseed oil in her father’s studio, she developed a passion for the arts, in particular for painting and drawing. When she turned 16, her gift was the registration at the Escuela de Arte Eladio Velez, a local art school in Sandra’s neighborhood. After receiving her BFA from the Universidad de Antioquia, she moved to New York and finished her MFA at Hunter College. Sandra’s work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and institutions in Colombia, New York, Japan, and Italy. She is a recipient of the Nathalie Angles Award and the Sommerville Arts Prize. Her work was selected as part of the (S) Files Biennial at El Museo del Barrio in New York. She was chosen as one of the Outstanding Antioqueños in the World, and her art practice was featured in a documentary that aired in her native city.
