STEPHEN DEKOCH

Stephen DeKoch, a self-taught painter, was born and raised in South Texas. His journey into the world of art began after he moved to Austin in the early 2000s. Initially driven by boredom and a pressing need to express his creativity, Stephen started painting on unconventional canvases such as wood, cardboard, and discarded items he found on the streets. His intent was to transform these pieces of trash into something beautiful, a metaphorical act that mirrored his own inner transformations.Stephen’s early works were gifted to family and friends, acts of generosity that soon revealed to him the profound joy of sharing his art. The praise and appreciation he received for his unique form of self-expression encouraged him to delve deeper into his creative endeavors. His paintings, characterized by a raw and emotive style, drew heavily from his personal emotions, dreams, inner monologues, and the tumultuous experiences of life. Music played a significant role in his creative process, with the intersection of music and visual art serving as a key inspiration. Stephen admired the collaborative spirit of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground, which influenced his own artistic philosophy. In 2019, Stephen made the pivotal decision to get sober. This marked a significant turning point in his life and art. He chose to focus intensely on painting, sequestering himself in a room with only his thoughts, records, and paints as companions. For two years, Stephen immersed himself in this solitary creative process, using art as a means to navigate and cope with his recovery. This period of isolation was both a personal challenge and a profound creative awakening.

Despite his prolific output, Stephen kept his artwork largely private, sharing it only with a select few. For five years, his paintings remained behind closed doors, serving as a personal testament to his journey and recovery. However, in March of 2024, to mark 5 years of sobriety, Stephen decided it was time to step into the public eye. Motivated by a desire to share his journey and help others through their own struggles, he began to exhibit his work.

Stephen DeKoch’s art is a vivid exploration of the human experience, rendered with a unique blend of vulnerability and strength. His work resonates with viewers, offering a window into his soul and a reflection of their own inner landscapes. Stephen not only challenges conventional notions of beauty but also underscores the potential for redemption and transformation within us all.

Today, Stephen DeKoch continues to paint in San Marcos, TX, his art serving as both a personal catharsis and a beacon of hope for others. His journey from a self-taught painter working with found materials to a celebrated artist is a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and the human spirit.
